Summary Reflection
Looking back at this design unit, I learned that design is a lot more intentional than I originally thought. Before this week, I mostly looked at designs based on whether I liked them or not. After reading The Vignelli Canon and completing the Design Blitz and design assignments, I started paying attention to why certain designs work. Things like spacing, balance, dominance, and simplicity are everywhere, even in everyday objects that most people probably never think twice about. I realized that good design is really about communication. Every choice has a purpose, whether it’s a font, color, image, or layout.
One thing that was harder than I expected was slowing down enough to analyze design. Taking the Design Blitz photos was easy, but explaining exactly why something demonstrated a specific design principle took more thought than I anticipated. I found myself looking at objects differently and questioning what made them effective or ineffective. It was also challenging to make design assignments that told a story instead of just creating something that looked visually interesting.
What was easier than expected was finding examples of design in my everyday life. Once I started paying attention, I noticed design principles everywhere around me. The concepts we learned in class weren’t limited to advertisements or websites and they showed up in household objects, signs, packaging, and even things sitting around my apartment. That made the assignments feel more approachable because I didn’t have to go searching very far for examples.
The most frustrating part was probably learning how much work goes into making something look simple. Before reading about design, I assumed minimalist designs were easier because they have fewer elements. Now I understand that removing unnecessary details while still communicating a message clearly can actually be harder. Every element has to earn its place.
The part I enjoyed most was seeing how creativity and design connect. Tim Owens talked about how we are all artists, and that idea stuck with me throughout the week. As someone who enjoys creating digital media, photography, and storytelling, I liked seeing how design can help strengthen a message instead of just decorating it. This unit made me more aware of the choices designers make and gave me a new appreciation for the design work I see every day
